Hey so I'm at College and when these dudes were helping me set up an internet connection, they found that my (for all you techies out there) MAC address or something doesnt exist. Like I guess its the vendor code and the code I have has never been registered in existence. So ya I'm getting a new laptop and I was wondering if anyone knows good brands or even exact products that are good for classwork and are overall solid laptops (no macs) for $1000 or under. Thanks.

I always by dells. Thats just me. I can rip a dell apart and put it back togethor no problem because I know the brand.
When it comes to laptops how big do you want? A good option I think would be a Dell Studio (about 4-7 pounds depending on screen size 14-17). You could get a nice studio 14z for around 800 dollars all told after upgrading a basic package to include a external cd/dvd drive since its not including in the laptop itself. With a uypgraded battery you could get 6 hours of battery life if you didn't have access to power. >7 is considered a desktop replacement. 5-7 pounds is considered light. <5 is considered ultralight and are usally called mini's or macbooks depending on who makes it.
I cant recomend any other computers from other brands as I am only familer with Dell. I dont like Dells Insipron laptops because I have had bad experiance with them as far as speed goes. I have not had a Dell Studio. I have used a Dell Studio XPS and they are good but they are desktop replacements pretty much.

I just need a decent sized laptop for schoolwork and possibly videos and stuff. I'll probably pull the trigger on an HP or Sony Vaio. Thanks for the help though guys!

The Archos 9 is a very nice netbook/tablet that's coming out in September and runs windows 7. My brother got one from Europe for around 500 Euros and loves it. What operating system would you be using because I know some nice 800$ laptops that have Vista but come with a free Wijdows 7 upgrade in October. Also, Cnet.com has very good laptop reviews and info so you might wanna check that out.
